The aim of the paper is to highlight how the social, economic, productive and environmental characteristics of the italian regions allow the agricultural sector to develop a function rather than another. Th is strongly depends on the level of urbanization of the diff erent territorial contexts we can identify on the Italian territory. In particular, the application of the multivariate statistics techniques allows to analyze the territorial multi-functionality of the social, agricultural, productive and environmental systems which characterize the Italian territory. Furthermore, the mentioned techniques allow to classify the Italian provinces in groups which are homogeneous inside them but heterogeneous among them according to the level of urbanization and/or rural development.
