According Scopus data-base, using “phthalate” and “GC” as key words, 758 papers have found since 1990 to 2014 with a strong and crescent interest for this class of compounds by the scientific community. This review focus the attention on the Phthalate ester (PAE) extraction procedures followed by GC-MS analysis applied to food matrices developed during these last 15 years (from 2000). In this way, 120 papers have been published divided according the different sample preparation/extraction methods: Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Solid-Phase (Micro)Extraction (SP(M)E), Dispersive Liquid-Liquid (Micro)Extraction (DLL(M)E), Head-Space Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (HS-SPME), microwave extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, ultra-sonication extraction, thermal desorption extraction and Soxhlet extraction. Finally, for a deeper information, two important issues, such as the phthalate toxicology and risk assessment and the blank problem in the analytical determinations, are discussed.
