This paper presents a perspective on the Social Market Economy and its problematic reception in Italy by examining the contribution of the Italian political scientist, Luigi Sturzo (1871-1959). Sturzo, who spent twenty-two years in exile in Great Britain and the United States because of his antifascism (1924-1946), elaborated a social theory called “popolarismo” and offered an interesting reading of the Social Market Economy’s founding fathers, also in a European key. This contribution allows us to highlight the international dimension of the Social Market Economy model and to understand the reasons for the difficulties in its implementation. Sturzo understood that the free market does not exist outside the rules of free competition and without an ethical perspective based on the centrality of the human person. This is, perhaps, the most valuable and significant legacy we have from reading the works of the fathers of the Social Market Economy, among them Luigi Sturzo.
