The article focuses on the Beaux-Arts pedagogic model – as it is known, based on the knowledge of the history of architecture through travel in Italy – and the influence exercised in American architecture schools. In particular, the con- tribution explores the figure of Alfred Dwight Foster Hamlin, among the most important architectural historians in US, and his teaching at the Columbia University School of Architecture.
