In ancient documents regarding soldiers, it is possible to find the formula veteranus Augusti: it reminds other similar like eques singularis Augusti, stator Augusti, frumentarius Augusti... and also evocatus Augusti, but scholars don’t agree about its meaning and the question is still debated. Aim of the paper is to show the geographical and chronological context and the frequency of this formula’s use: to this purpose, the Author collected all epigraphic sources of veterani Augusti and analysed them from a geographical and chronological point of view, paying attention to evidences of social and economical relationship between those veterans and the urban communities by which they choose to live after discharge. The analysis of the sources is followed by a proposal of interpretation, in order to understand who, between ex soldiers, can be defined a veteran ‘of the Emperor’.
