Focusing on the role of universities for a sustainable development (SD), we carried out a survey in a small Italian public institution -the University of Molise- to investigate the opinion of two stakeholder categories, academics and external stakeholders. Some differences emerged in stakeholders’ perception about University’s values and roles. Further differences were in the opinions about the institutional activities involved and about the priority actions to be taken. The importance of the third mission did not emerge. The knowledge of stakeholders’ perceptions is a precondition for promoting an integrated and collaborative process for the SD of socio-economic systems, and of universities. This process could be even more strategic in case of small-sized institutions and local contexts.
