Background: Xerosis is a skin condition that can affect subjects of any age and skin phototype, involving different body areas. Objectives: the aim of the present study was to evaluate the ef-ficacy and the tolerability of a moisturizing and lenitive cream in patients with xerotic eczema, moderate atopic dermatitis and xerotic skin. Materials and methods: 70 patients, aged between 18 and 60 years (medium age: 36.2 years) and affected by xerotic eczema, atopic dermatitis and xerotic skin, were enrolled in the study. All subjects were treated with Physiogel® A.I. Corpo cream, a fluid cream containing ceramide 3 and n-palmitoylethanolamide. This is the most important cutaneous endocannabinoid with antinflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant properties. The product was applied 2 times daily for 4 weeks in the affected area. The evaluation of efficacy was performed through a specific questionnaire concerning clinical signs (scaling, dryness and erythema) and symptoms (itching, burning) before (T0), after 14 days (T1) and after 28 days (T 2) of treatment. Measurements of transepidermal water loss was also performed in T0, T1 and T2. Results: tolerability was defined very good by all patients. These reported a significant and rapid reduction of signs and symptoms.. This improvement was defined very good for erythema already after 2 weeks of treatment, good for scaling and dryness, above all after 4 weeks of treatment. Relatively to the subjective symptoms, control of burning was defined optimal and rapid, while itch, well controlled after 2 week treatment, ulteriorly reduces itself after other 2 weeks of therapy. Furthermore, a significant reduction of TEWL values in treated areas after only 2 weeks of therapy was observed; this reduction was greater after 4 weeks, compared to pre-treatment values. Conclusions: Physiogel® A.I. Corpo cream has shown optimal tolerability, very good moisturizing and antiflammatory properties and positive effects on the cutaneous barrier in all patients enrolled in the study.
