The influence of sprinkler, drip, sip and subirrigation methods on both the degree of feeder root infection (RI) and the inoculum density (ID) of Phytophthora spp, in the rhizosphere of citrus plants was investigated. Phytophthora nicotianae Breda de Haan var. parasitica (Dast.) Waterh. was the only species recovered in the experimenlal fìeld. During the irrigation season, significantly higher ID values were found in June and September under subirrigation and sip than under sprinkler irrigatìon methods; RI values showed lesser increases under drip and sprinkler than under sip and subirrigation methods. In particular, from June to August and in October, significantly higher RI values were found under sip than under drip and sprinkler irrigation. The results obtained point out the different influence of irrigation method on Phytophthora root rot and seem to indicate that sprinkler and drip irrigation, as carried out in the experimental field, induces less favourable conditions for citrus root decay.
