A «genius» in crisis between «raison d’état» and market rules. Military engineers and urban transformations in Naples during 19th century. This article examines the process of urban and architectural renewal in formerly military areas in Naples in the second half of nineteenth century. The paper aims at illustrating the complex network of relationships established, in that historical period, between military engineers and civil architects. That will ignite a series meaningful experiences of planning for the strategical transformation of important urban areas, such as the ancient «Largo del Castello» (today called «piazza Municipio”). From the analysis of this network of relationships, what emerges is the role played by important Neapolitan engineers and architects, such as Francesco Sponzilli, Domencio Cervati, Antonio and Fausto Niccolini, Luigi and Francesco Giura, Enrico and Ettore Alvino, Emmanuele Melisurgo.
