Within the extensive corpus of literature on neo-medieval architecture in southern Italy, Molise can be regarded as an “artistic region” that has yet to be the subject of comprehensive exploration. This essay aims to offer an initial overview of the main neo-medievalist experiences that influenced Molise’s architectural culture between the last two decades of the 19th century and the second half of the 20th century, starting from the need to contextualise an architectural work such as the neo-Gothic sanctuary of Castelpetroso (1890-1975), particularly in relation to the studies and field research that characterised the long period of rediscovery of the local medieval artistic heritage.
