In this paper I examine the interactions between economists and policymakers, using Hirschman and Berman’s (2014) analysis as a framework and Modigliani’s public engagements as a case study. I concentrate particularly on Modigliani’s view of the role of economists, which emerged in his early writings, as well as his use of macroeconometric models, the Fed Board model in the us and the Bank of Italy model in Italy, to influence the policy agenda both directly and indirectly.

Abstract

In this paper I examine the interactions between economists and policymakers, using Hirschman and Berman’s (2014) analysis as a framework and Modigliani’s public engagements as a case study. I concentrate particularly on Modigliani’s view of the role of economists, which emerged in his early writings, as well as his use of macroeconometric models, the Fed Board model in the us and the Bank of Italy model in Italy, to influence the policy agenda both directly and indirectly.
