In this article, I move from the idea that the current debate on the “freedom of philosophizing” largely ignores the issue of the “philosopher’s freedom”, even though the latter is the very pre-condition to speak of the former. In the first section, I briefly introduce the issue moving from Stefan Zweig’s intellectual biography of Friedrich Nietzsche, considered as an illustrative case. In the second section, I consider and discuss the freedom of philosophizing as a “social institution”, and more particularly as an outcome of the institutionalization process to which philosophy has been subjected during Western modernity, also trying to highlight some of its problematic aspects.
