Restorations and archaeological excavations carried out between 1987 and 2003 in the church of Santa Maria di Pernosano, Pago del Vallo di Lauro (Avellino), provide us with new data on the liturgical decoration that had been spoliated since the 17th century, when most of the marbles were removed and lost. Analysis of the surviving finds, now kept in different places, allows new considerations on the original location of the sculptural reliefs, which can be dated between the first half of the 10th and the end of the 12th century, as well as on the elites who commissioned the work to Byzantine rather than Lombard craftsmen, as suggested by comparisons with contemporary sculptural production in coastal Campania.

Abstract
Restorations and archaeological excavations carried out between 1987 and 2003 in the church of Santa Maria di Pernosano, Pago del Vallo di Lauro (Avellino), provide us with new data on the liturgical decoration that had been spoliated since the 17th century, when most of the marbles were removed and lost. Analysis of the surviving finds, now kept in different places, allows new considerations on the original location of the sculptural reliefs, which can be dated between the first half of the 10th and the end of the 12th century, as well as on the elites who commissioned the work to Byzantine rather than Lombard craftsmen, as suggested by comparisons with contemporary sculptural production in coastal Campania.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
