The archive of the Tuscan merchant Francesco Datini preserves a series of account books called Household Expense Books (Quaderni di spese di casa), which have already been used to analyse his consumption and eating habits. In addition to the expenses for food, these accounts also note other expenses incurred for other family needs (e.g. the purchase of cookware, textiles, heating costs). The Household Expence Books can also provide information useful for studying some aspects of household management (from servant’s wages to home repairs), contributing, thanks to the integration with other papers (letters and inventories), to better specify the consumption patterns of daily life. The aim of this paper is to analyse the types of household expenses incurred during the period 1367-1401, with a particular focus on food consumption.

Abstract
The archive of the Tuscan merchant Francesco Datini preserves a series of account books called Household Expense Books (Quaderni di spese di casa), which have already been used to analyse his consumption and eating habits. In addition to the expenses for food, these accounts also note other expenses incurred for other family needs (e.g. the purchase of cookware, textiles, heating costs). The Household Expence Books can also provide information useful for studying some aspects of household management (from servant’s wages to home repairs), contributing, thanks to the integration with other papers (letters and inventories), to better specify the consumption patterns of daily life. The aim of this paper is to analyse the types of household expenses incurred during the period 1367-1401, with a particular focus on food consumption.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
