This contribution aims to describe the experience of an energy cooperative, AMARES, born in Molise and formed by private companies that aims to present an innovative model of production and consumption of electricity produced from renewable sources. This experience shows that the citizen, individually or in association, is not only a bearer of needs but can also become an importer of solutions. Groups of people can put their time, ideas, resources into the transformation processes that affect the community and the common good. This is the principle of horizontal subsidiarity which is particularly present in the field of local public services such as energy.
