Abstract

Only recently Italo-Greek monasticism in southern Italy has been framed within the great migration phenomenon that affected southern Italy after the Arab conquest of Sicily. The paper intends to explore the social and institutional consequences of the migration of the Byzantine population and the monks into the Lombard dominions, questioning the role played by both these agents in the definition of settlement structures in the destination lands.
