Aspirazioni, peripezie e disavventure di Pier Giovanni Capece Galeota, ambasciatore della città di Napoli a Madrid (1597-1644)

The embassies of the city of Naples to Madrid, as well as those from other cities and kingdoms of the Spanish Monarchy throughout the Early Modern period, were representative practices that provided subjects with the opportu-nity to present themselves “a sus reales pies” to protect or expand ancient prerogatives or negotiate new privileges. This essay reconstructs the profile and embassy of Pier Giovanni Capece Galeota (1597-1644), a protagonist of a little known affair which serves as an exemplary testimony of the difficulties and risks involved in an embassy and the repercussions that the envoys of the city could suffer at the end of their mission in Madrid.

Le ambasciate della città di Napoli a Madrid, così come quelle di altre città e reinos della Corona spagnola avvenute nel corso dell’età moderna, furono pratiche di rappresentanza che davano ai sudditi la possibilità di presentarsi «a sus reales pies» per tutelare o estendere antiche prerogative o per negoziare nuovi privilegi. L’articolo ricostruisce il profilo e l’ambasciata di Pier Giovanni Capece Galeota (1597-1644), protagonista di una vicenda, ad oggi pressoché sconosciuta, che testimonia in modo esemplare quali potessero essere le difficoltà e i rischi di un’ambasciata e le ripercussioni che gli inviati della città potevano subire al termine di una legazione a Madrid, tornati a Napoli.
