Abstract

In 1671, after the death of Anne Hyde, wife of James Stuart, the English court considered a new marriage for the Duke of York. The Stuarts, bound to France by the Treaty of Dover, accepted the proposal of a match with the Habsburgs, which Madrid and Vienna – at the dawn of the Dutch War – saw as an opportunity to loosen the alliance between Charles II and Louis XIV. Using a varied series of diplomatic voices from Madrid, London and Vienna, the article traces the failed marriage between James Stuart and Claudia Felicita of Habsburg, Archduchess of Innsbruck, analyzing the weight on the negotiation of the political European context and the internal tensions within the courts involved. It also examines the role played by the papacy, as well as those aspects related to dynastic marriages, negotiations and their rituals that are attracting great interest in today’s European historiography.
