An analysis of the income produced by the plots of building land that belonged to the Church of Cosenza offers the opportunity to understand how the management of the ecclesiastical heritage may have influenced the development lines of the medieval town during the thirteenth century. Unlike other more or less contemporary urban growth phenomena, in Cosenza this process appears to be triggered by a catastrophic event. We cannot therefore speak of urban expansion due to demographic growth, but rather of reaction to an event that has strongly compromised the oldest urban structure. This traumatic event is the earthquake of 1184 which will change the developments of the urban morphology. Two interventions in particular will determine the change following the earthquake: the relocation of the Cathedral building and the opening of the construction site of the castle wanted by Emperor Frederick II.
