4.3.4. In viaggio verso il mare: la tratta Campobasso-Termoli

In the last two centuries the integrated transport system in Molise has been characterized by so many difficulties that even today the region's infrastructure presents many gaps and deficiencies. The long terms difficulties in intra- and extra-regional connections have affected the region's development from the second half of the XIX century up to today. However, in the last decades, many projects have been proposed to develop, in a different way, some disused or less used railway sections. The paper aims to retrace the history of the Campobasso-Termoli railways since its first design, to analyze the impact that its construction had on the development of the local economy; to propose possible recovery strategies, through a touristic use of these railways. This kind of reuse strategy is already underway, but only on special occasions. Is this a way to transform the Molise’s railways failure into a new opportunity?
