The article is a review essay of Valente’s, La Ostpolitik della Santa Sede e la Jugoslavia socialista 1945-1971 (Holy See’s Ostpolitik and Socialist Yugoslavia, 1945- 1971). It outlines the importance of Vatican archival sources in the framework of the studies on the Cold War. In the case of Marshal Tito’s Yugoslavia, dialogue with the Vatican went together with confrontation between religious principles and ideological postulates. Basically, if Holy See’s agenda towards Yugoslavia was gradually driven to dialogue, Yugoslavia did not change its own premises, in spite of papal changings along the years and the fresh air coming from the Second Vatican Council.
