This paper focuses on the food consumption and eating habits of the merchant Francesco Datini and his extended family. Francesco Datini's diet, usually characterised by the abundance, variety and quality of its meals, reflects the late fourteenth century merchant bourgeoisie culinary culture, squezeed between ostentation and sef-restraint. It also points out the role of food culture both as a social phenomenon and as an element of group identity.
