Francesco Datini's diet, usually characterised by the abundance, variety and quality of its meals, reflects the late fourteenth century merchant bourgeoisie culinary culture, squezeed between ostentation and sef-restraint. It also points out the role of food culture both as a social phenomenon and as an element of group identity.
