The historic background and the engineering aspects of the construction of the outlet tunnels of the Albano (398-397 BC) and Fucine (10 BC-54 AD) lakes are employed to show how the major underground works of Roman civilization served also as carriers of technical knowledge and organizational skills over the centuries, up to the birth of modern tunnel engineering in the nineteenth century.
