This contribution takes into consideration the macellum building (slaughterhouse) of Saepinum in Altilia (CB, Molise), which still lacks a comprehensive scientific edition despite having been dug out in the 1950s. Amongst the several problem-prone aspects that have so far remained unresolved, the issue of establishing its chronological phases stands out as one of the most relevant. In fact, scholars variously date the building between the Augustan Age and the Late Empire. Through the analysis of techniques and types of the surviving floor coverings (unknown to date), and specifically of large tesserae mosaics paving the porch and the building's main area, it was possible to provide a correct description as well as graphic restoration of such floors, to establish at least a timeline reference for the currently visible structures and, lastly, to develop some interesting observations about the commonly used terminology for this type of mosaics.

Abstract
This contribution takes into consideration the macellum building (slaughterhouse) of Saepinum in Altilia (CB, Molise), which still lacks a comprehensive scientific edition despite having been dug out in the 1950s. Amongst the several problem-prone aspects that have so far remained unresolved, the issue of establishing its chronological phases stands out as one of the most relevant. In fact, scholars variously date the building between the Augustan Age and the Late Empire. Through the analysis of techniques and types of the surviving floor coverings (unknown to date), and specifically of large tesserae mosaics paving the porch and the building's main area, it was possible to provide a correct description as well as graphic restoration of such floors, to establish at least a timeline reference for the currently visible structures and, lastly, to develop some interesting observations about the commonly used terminology for this type of mosaics.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
