Although the abundance and relevance of Aquileia's sculptural heritage is renowned, it is still waiting for an accurate and insightful analysis of its material, which can hopefully be accomplished within the context of the project Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani. While waiting for this to happen, it is still beneficial to study homogeneous groups of material as well as individual pieces of relevant interest, such as the herewith portrayed sculptural group, which has never undergone any accurate scrutiny despite it being known for some time. It was brought to the surface in 1940 in the funerary compound of the Trebii, in the south-west necropolis of the town, during excavation works directed by Giovanni Brusin. Whilst no concern arises as to the dating of the piece of work, which was almost immediately established by the experts as being the Age of the Antonines, and can be, in fact, herewith confirmed and also better described, it is much more difficult to trace the iconographic tradition and the composition of the Aquileian group which currently has no direct terms of comparison. The question is still open as to this work being a replica of a composition resulting from transformation (in Roman age) of an Alexandrian original copy or coming from a different figurative tradition. Finally, a suggestion is made as to the specific meaning of the sculptural group as well as a proposal about its exact location within the funerary compound.
Nonostante sia nota la ricchezza e l’importanza del patrimonio scultoreo di Aquileia, esso tuttavia attende ancora l’analisi puntuale ed approfondita del materiale, che si spera di poter realizzare all’interno del progetto del Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani. Nell’attesa che ciò si realizzi, rimane utile studiare gruppi omogenei di materiale o singoli pezzi di particolare interesse, come il gruppo statuario qui presentato, che pur essendo già da tempo noto non ha mai ricevuto un’analisi puntuale. Esso venne alla luce nel 1940 nel recinto funerario dei Trebii, nella necropoli sud-occidentale della città, durante uno scavo diretto da Giovanni Brusin. Se la datazione, fissata quasi subito dagli studiosi all’epoca antonina, non desta alcun problema ed anzi può essere non solo confermata, ma anche meglio circoscritta, molto più difficile risulta risalire alla tradizione iconografica ed a quella della composizione del gruppo aquileiese, che attualmente non ha confronti diretti. Rimane pertanto aperta la questione se esso replichi una composizione risultante dalla trasformazione -avvenuta in età romana- di un originale alessandrino, oppure dipenda da una diversa tradizione figurativa. Si avanza, infine, una suggestione circa il significato specifico del gruppo ed una proposta sulla sua collocazione all’interno del recinto.
