L'anthropologie face aux problèmes du monde moderne

The Japanese Lessons given by Lévi-Strauss in 1986 are dedicated to anthropology and the challenges of the modern world. The text, which is unpublished in the original French version, represents the first western edition. A man concerned with the truly fundamental problems of our time emerges from these pages. Lévi-Strauss deals with these issues as an anthropologist who is fully aware of the fact that his identity and education are rooted in western thought and confronts himself with the culture and history of Japan that appears to be “far” both geographically and spiritually. This book first gives a concise overview of Lévi-Strauss’ body of work and explains why his social theories and methods are still pertinent today addressing different themes such as the radical otherness of uses, practices, and beliefs, as well as the so called “the view from afar” which embraces both meridians, scanning West and East Asia.

Le Lezioni giapponesi, tenute da Lévi-Strauss nel 1986, sono dedicate all’antropologia di fronte ai problemi del mondo moderno. Il testo, inedito nell’originale francese, conosce la sua prima edizione in lingua occidentale. Dalla lettura di queste pagine emerge un Lévi-Strauss in presa diretta con alcuni dei problemi fondamentali del nostro tempo, esaminati con lo spirito dell’antropologo che sa di essere un uomo di cultura di formazione occidentale a confronto con la cultura e la storia di un Oriente geograficamente e spiritualmente estremo, come quello nipponico. Il libro dispiega sinteticamente la portata complessiva degli esiti principali delle ricerche condotte da Lévi-Strauss: esiti che qui incontrano la prova dell’attualità, oltre che – come nella migliore tradizione antropologica – la prova dell’alterità radicale di usi, pratiche, credenze, lo sguardo da lontano trovando di che spaziare da un meridiano culturale all’altro: dall’Occidente all’Asia orientale.
