Starting from the references to the Smart City and to the Living Labs of the Strategic Research Framework of the JPI "Urban Europe", the paper tries to outline a more limited reference framework specifically aimed at fostering an approach to Smart City through an Urban/Territorial Living Lab concept, able to both overcome what looks like "deficits of the JPI” and to enhance the potential of real "socio-eco-techno-logical" innovation linked to such an approach. Based on these premises the paper also describes briefly some paradigmatic experiences of Living Labs for Smart Cities/Territories, highlighting their interest for an innovative spatial planning research perspective.
