This paper presents and discusses evidence for mixed careers combining municipal service with military and/or equestrian roles in two towns in eastern Numidia, understood here as a geographical region: Madauros and Thubursicu Numidarum. The evidence consists of inscriptions recording soldiers or veterans, equestrian officers, and equites Romani who held municipal offices or priesthoods and/or distinguished themselves through evergetic acts towards their communities. Both were medium-sized towns situated on either side of what would later become the boundary between Africa Proconsularis and Numidia, and in certain respects they shared broadly similar characteristics. In both towns, the surviving evidence allows us to reconstruct family groups, sometimes with full genealogies, whose members rose in status over the course of a century and were closely interconnected. The study covers the imperial period down to the Tetrarchy, although the evidence dates almost exclusively from the second century to the mid-third century CE.
