This paper deals with a group of pottery (amphorae, coarse and cooking wares, lamp) found in a room of the Roman house excavated in via Carmine 2. Sealed by the collapse of the building structures, amphorae and the other ceramics were found fragmented but fully recomposable because, evidently, they were yet in use when the structures came down. This collapse has been connected to the earthquake of 346 AD but this pottery suggests an earlier date, in the second half of the third century AD. Consequently, the earthquake that produced this structural collapse cannot be that of 346 AD but an earlier destroying earthquake, not recorded by the literary sources.

Abstract
This paper deals with a group of pottery (amphorae, coarse and cooking wares, lamp) found in a room of the Roman house excavated in via Carmine 2. Sealed by the collapse of the building structures, amphorae and the other ceramics were found fragmented but fully recomposable because, evidently, they were yet in use when the structures came down. This collapse has been connected to the earthquake of 346 AD but this pottery suggests an earlier date, in the second half of the third century AD. Consequently, the earthquake that produced this structural collapse cannot be that of 346 AD but an earlier destroying earthquake, not recorded by the literary sources.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
