The archaeological site of Saepinum is situated in Molise, in the province of Campobasso. Studies undertaken in the first half of last century by Valerio Cianfarani, then Superintendent for Antiquities in the Abruzzo, and the writings of the ancient author Livy, date the town’s foundation to about 300 B.C. Positioned astride the Pescasseroli-Candela drove-road, from a cultural point of view it is one of the most interesting and evocative sites in Molise due to the coexistence of historical remains and evidence of lives lived among them, which has ensued during the centuries. The conservation work carried out by the Superintendency for Molise in recent decades has aimed to highlight the characterising aspects. This study of the site, in particular of one of its four entrance gates, the Porta Bojano built in the 1st century A.D., follows the trend established by such initiatives. One of the study’s aims, given the limited existence related archive material, was to ascertain and record the monument’s condition, which was undertaken by means of a digital reconstruction based upon an on-site survey. This course, which beginning with current shared and codified methodologies for data acquisition and rendering undertaken through the integration of digital modes of acquisition using active and passive sensors, both ground-based and aerial, resulting in the 3D reconstruction, finds its conclusion in the traditional mode of communication, which is a selective graphic rendering orientated towards specific objectives.
