The essay reviews the state of Italian scholarship on the Spanish military orders, highlighting how they still constitute a largely unexplored field of research. Yet the Spanish military orders maintained relations with the Italian peninsula both in the medieval period and in the early modern era, when they served as instruments of the Crown’s political action in the territories under its control. The contribution presents the most recent research on knights of Italian origin who wore the Spanish military habit between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, emphasizing the need for a unified methodological approach that overcomes the prevailing fragmentation of the studies conducted to date.
Il saggio ripercorre lo stato degli studi italiani sugli Ordini militari spagnoli, mettendo in luce come essi rappresentino ancora un ambito di ricerca poco esplorato, nonostante i rapporti intrattenuti con la penisola italiana non solo in età medievale, ma anche in epoca moderna, quando furono strumenti dell’azione politica della Corona nei territori sotto il suo controllo. Il contributo presenta le ricerche più recenti sui cavalieri di origine italiana che vestirono l’abito militare spagnolo tra Cinque e Seicento, evidenziando la necessità di un approccio metodologico unitario che superi la prevalente frammentarietà degli studi finora condotti.
