After a brief introduction on the human-horse relationship in Roman times, two pairs of stelae from the 2nd and 3rd centuries are analysed, the first relating to two equites singulares Augusti and the second to two equites of the Praetorian Guard. The aim is to highlight how changes in the modes of representation reflect political, social, and military events over the identified chronological span, as well as changes in the relationship between horses and riders.

Abstract
