In the present process of economic globalisation and, as regards retail trade, with the coming out of more and more marked trends to concentration and surface extension, the question arises about the role which traditional commercial structures such as those characteristic of Italian historic centres can play in the future. Undoubtedly, historic centres in Italy are nowadays under the pressure of change dynamics, practically expressed by the diversification of the distribution network, the fast diffusion of hypermarkets and shopping centres in the outskirts and the change in the consumers behaviour, more and more oriented to the American style. Competition between the shops in the historic centres and the large retail sale surfaces settled in the outskirts, that is one of the most typical feature of the present change phase in the sector of retail trade in Italy, receives further inputs by the contradictions in urban and commercial planning. The Authors investigate about the change dynamics of the retail trade sector in the Italian historic centres and their adaptability to the present processes, showing the results of a long-term research which has been applied to various study cases, with the consciousness that also significant regional differences really exist.

Abstract
The Authors investigate about the change dynamics of the retail trade sector in the Italian historic centres and their adaptability to the present processes, showing the results of a long-term research which has been applied to various study cases, with the consciousness that also significant regional differences really exist.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
