Abstract

The management of safety of road and other infrastructure networks is a key problem depending on the proper analysis of risks associated with climate change and involves different areas of knowledge. If the structural risk is primarily an engineering problem, other hazards, like the geological one, require different spatial and temporal analysis levels, so that a large number of heterogenous parameters are to be assessed and combined. The evolution and development of digital solutions as well as the capabilities associated with current Geographic Information Systems (GIS) platforms and Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the Br(idge)IM version suggest the route towards an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. The paper is structured into sections that describe the procedure and potential of integrated digital systems for knowledge and preservation of existing infrastructures and road systems. An experience made with the aim of extend GIS capabilities by integrating digital data for visual inspections, such as a Virtual Reality (VR)-based system, to improve the field inspection data assessment and validation is discussed.
