Forest planning and management play a key role to foster and assisting adaptation processes. However, in order to plan and manage adaptively, being aware of the problem and the possible solutions is needed. In this context, the AForClimate project found interesting: • understand the perception of forest technicians and managers about the impact of cli mate change on forests and their views on possible solutions to increase their adaptation; • collect suggestions regarding experiences, good practices and possible solutions already in place. • verify the practical feasibility of some choices of adaptation of the planning to the climatic variability. Specifically, this is done evaluating the level of flexibility of the third-level forest plans in terms of time, harvesting and silvicultural treatments within the regional regulation. In order to obtain this aim, within the framework of Action C3 of the AForClimate project, two different questionnaires have been created: • A first questionnaire, on a large scale, addressed to professionals in the forestry sector (forest managers, but also civil servants and students). Its aim is investigating the perception of these stakeholders regarding problem (impact of the climate crisis on forest ecosystems) and to know the best management solutions; • A second questionnaire, more specific, addressed to officials of the Italian Regions and Autonomous Provinces. Its aim is investigating the current possibility of making forest management plans more flexible. The two surveys, carried out under the AForClimate, involved 246 experts and 16 out of 21 Regions and Autonomous Provinces. The results have been interesting and have contributed to get explicit important information on which some of the future choices in the field of adaptation of forests to the climate crisis can be based: • the Italian forestry sector is aware of the current environmental problem; therefore it needs concrete tools to start operating through effective solutions; • two clear general guidelines, underlined by most respondents, concern the need for greater diversification of forest stands both on a local scale (in terms of structure and species composition) and on a landscape scale, and the implementation of fire prevention activities, especially in the Mediterranean area; • From the point of view of governance, according to the stakeholders involved, more commitment and clarity is needed regarding funding and incentive policies, in order to foster a management change towards activities aimed at making more resilient forests. To do this, the establishment of a permanent National Technical Table constantly discussing these issues, influencing policies and promoting good practices, could be a far-sighted choice; • The current legislation on third-level forest planning appears to be fairly flexible, although this flexibility has not been designed specifically to operate in a climate crisis context. In this scenario, the establishment of a National Technical Table could lead to proposals for regulatory changes in this regard, pushing Regions and Autonomous Provinces to consider more the climate variability within forest management plan.
