[Religious Liberty and Citizenship in Fromental Halévy's La Juive (1835)].The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between politics and religion within Fromental Halévy's La Juive. After analyzing the deep influence of the concept of tolerance of Voltaire and Mendelsshon on the dramaturgical choices of Halévy and Scribe, the contribution will focus on the characteristics of the concept of religious freedom that emerges in the work, significantly linked to a conception of citizenship aimed at safeguarding the respect for the difference and confessional specificity of the Jewish population. Through the appeal to an inclusive notion of citizenship and the separation between the civil and religious spheres, La Juive ended up expressing the wish for a full assimilation of the Jewish component in the French nation for the creation of an imaginary and a common identity heritage and for claiming a liberal state based on the legal equality of citizens and religious cults.
