This work examines code-switching phenomena between Italian and dialect in interactions containing a compliment in a rural country, Cancello ed Arnone (CE). The main functions covered in the corpus are discourse related (comment, quotation, change of participant constellation). In answering a compliment the Italian-dialect code-switching is often related to those kinds of compliment responses by which the illocutionary force of the compliment is toned down.
