Le difficili condizioni economiche, sociali e tecniche dei piccoli agricoltori nei PVS sono parzialmente dovute alle loro difficoltà di accesso ai mercati internazionali dei prodotti agricoli. Il Contract Farming è un nuovo modello di relazione con gli operatori commerciali nel settore agricolo, che è stato sperimentato dalle organizzazioni del Fair Trade ed è preso in considerazione in varie iniziative della FAO. La recente Legal Guide elaborata da UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD è un importante supporto per dar vita ad equilibrati rapporti di Contract Farming quale base di relazioni durevoli e proficue per tutte le parti coinvolte.
