As position paper of the Input 2012 session with the same title, this contribution outlines first of all the framework for the research activities to be developped in the field of spatial planning for a well characterized approoach to the topic of Smart Cities. The focus of this approach is identified at the intersection of the research on Smart Citieswith the theory and practice of the so called Living Labs. On such premises the paper briefly describes a paradigmatic experience of thiintersection (the CIP ICT PSP Periphèria Project) and finally introduces some other relevant and convergent experiences, presented at the same session.
