During the first wave, the spread of the pandemic in Molise appears to be substantially linked to single episodes of contagion that generated the perception of an immune context, far from the dramas of northern Italy. The proposed analysis focuses on a sort of zero phase of the contagion, a stage of incipient epidemic spread in an inland territory made up of small towns, with a low population density, ageing processes and dramatic depopulation. The Molise micro-observatory provides a detailed reconstruction of the phases of the contagion and makes it possible to identify critical elements in the territory, as well as factors that favoured an initial containment of the pandemic. Using a series of indicators, it traces the strengths and weaknesses of the territorial context in an attempt to identify the elements that contributed to determining the well-known dramas of the second wave.
