The paper analyzes the case of Pontedera as the Piaggio "company town", the most important metal-mechanical company in the centre-south of Italy, with the intention of understanding how the signs that the industrial history has given the area still remain, shaping and transforming the landscape, but also the territory as a whole. The authors highlight the uniqueness and importance of that special relationship between man, work and territory of which the industrial landscape bears witness, making use of a quantitative and qualitative survey methodology capable of bringing out the economic, social and cultural values that lie behind the recent transformations and current town regeneration process.

Abstract

The paper analyzes the case of Pontedera as the Piaggio "company town", the most important metal-mechanical company in the centre-south of Italy, with the intention of understanding how the signs that the industrial history has given the area still remain, shaping and transforming the landscape, but also the territory as a whole. The authors highlight the uniqueness and importance of that special relationship between man, work and territory of which the industrial landscape bears witness, making use of a quantitative and qualitative survey methodology capable of bringing out the economic, social and cultural values that lie behind the recent transformations and current town regeneration process.
