The contribution is divided into two sections. In the first section, the sources relating to the female figures named Thermantia who accompanied three of the most eminent officials of the Theodosian era (Theodosius father, Emperor Theodosius and Stilicho) are analysed. In the second section, the focus shifts to other categories of documents (consular diptychs and celebratory dishes) and to a famous magister militum et vir patricius of the first half of the Vth Cent.: Ardaburius Aspar. In both cases the survey focuses on the representation of rank and dynastic ties and on the forms of its transmission, in order to identify recurrences, persistences and discontinuities peculiar to this historical phase.
