Perennemente connessi. Un’analisi sociologica sugli usi dello smartphone

This research work wants to describe the use of the smartphone in today’s Italy, focusing the analysis on the home environment and the family group, based on what has already been done in studies of domestication theory. The research question, therefore, concerns what use individuals make of the mobile phone within the home environment and how this medium affects the relationships and organization of family daily life, as well as on how it represents a pivotal tool in the connection between the private (domestic) and public sphere. The innovative element of the study is the empirical approach adopted since, unlike the research contexts of the media domestication paradigm (which prefer an ethnographic and micro-sociological method), this research adopts a quantitative approach, because the interest it was to arrive, in an exploratory way, to define a first description on the use of the mobile phone in the family and inside the home environment, trying to involve as many subjects as quickly as possible. The research is therefore based on a web-survey; the data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed online, to which 266 subjects of all ages replied. The questionnaire was constructed in order to empirically detect the role assumed by this device, addressing questions about the perception of the importance assumed by the smartphone in everyday life, as well as its use within the home and family context and as a connection tool between the intimate and private sphere and the public sphere. The data, since obtained from a non-probabilistic sample, cannot be generalized and cannot be representative of the population. The main results of the research – interesting to understand what is the preferred type of communication implemented through the use of the smartphone, as well as the behavior assumed by the social actors when they return home – can be summarizes as follow: a) the propensity to send messages text to communicate with others rather than making a voice call; b) the close interrelation between the use of the mobile phone and the relationship with the members of one’s family through it, to the detriment of face-to-face social relationships; c) the tendency to always carry the mobile phone in various domestic environments; d) the ability to use the smartphone as a connection tool between the private and public spheres of life, by sharing the practices and experiences that characterize daily life. Having studied this medium with a view to domestication theory has made it possible to highlight how it is actually a mediator in the context of the most disparate social practices implemented in the daily life of contemporary individuals and in the crystallization of everyone’s routine. Furthermore, it made it possible to detect how the subjects involved in the research make sense of mobile technology, as well as how it is reflected in the ways and in the specific actions in which life is lived, especially in the context of family relationships experienced and maintained at inside the home walls.

L’intento del presente lavoro di ricerca è quello di descrivere l’utilizzo dello smartphone nell’Italia di oggi, concentrando l’analisi all’ambiente domestico e al gruppo familiare, sulla base di quanto già fatto negli studi fondati sulla domestication theory. La domanda di ricerca che muove l’intero lavoro, pertanto, riguarda quale uso gli individui facciano del telefono mobile all’interno dell’ambiente domestico e come questo medium vada a impattare sulle relazioni e sull’organizzazione della vita quotidiana propria delle famiglie, nonché su come esso rappresenti uno strumento cardine nella connessione tra la sfera privata (cioè domestica) e quella pubblica. L’elemento innovativo dello studio è l’approccio empirico adottato poiché, a differenza dei contesti di ricerca propri del paradigma della domesticazione dei media (che prediligono un metodo etnografico e micro-sociologico), questa ricerca adotta un approccio quantitativo, perché l’interesse è stato quello di giungere, in modo esplorativo, a definire una prima descrizione sugli usi del telefono mobile in famiglia e all’interno dell’ambiente domestico, cercando di coinvolgere il maggior numero di soggetti nel minor tempo possibile. La ricerca è perciò impostata su una web-survey, i cui dati sono stati raccolti mediante un questionario strutturato diffuso online, a cui hanno risposto 266 soggetti di tutte le età. Il questionario è stato costruito in modo da rilevare empiricamente il ruolo assunto da questo device, indirizzando le domande sulla percezione dell’importanza assunta dallo smartphone dentro la vita quotidiana, nonché sul suo utilizzo all’interno del contesto domestico e familiare e come strumento di connessione tra la sfera intima e privata e sfera pubblica. I dati, poiché ricavati da un campione di tipo non probabilistico, non sono generalizzabili e rappresentativi dell’intera popolazione. I principali risultati della ricerca – interessanti per comprendere quale sia la tipologia di comunicazione preferita messa in atto tramite l’uso dello smartphone, nonché il comportamento assunto dagli attori sociali al loro rientro in casa – riguardano in sintesi: a) la propensione a inviare messaggi di testo per comunicare con gli altri piuttosto che effettuare una chiamata vocale; b) la stretta interrelazione tra l’utilizzo del telefono mobile e il relazionarsi con i membri della propria famiglia mediante esso, a scapito delle relazioni sociali face-to-face; c) la tendenza a portare il telefono mobile con sé nei vari ambienti domestici; d) l’attitudine a utilizzare lo smartphone come strumento di connessione tra sfera privata e sfera pubblica della vita, mediante la condivisione delle pratiche e delle esperienze caratterizzanti la vita quotidiana. L’aver studiato questo medium nell’ottica della domestication theory ha permesso di evidenziare come esso sia effettivamente un mediatore nel contesto delle più disparate pratiche sociali messe in atto nella vita quotidiana degli individui contemporanei e nella cristallizzazione della routine di ognuno. Inoltre, ha consentito di rilevare come gli stessi soggetti, coinvolti nella ricerca, diano senso alla tecnologia mobile, nonché come essa si rifletta nei modi e nelle specifiche azioni in cui la vita viene vissuta, soprattutto nell’ambito delle relazioni familiari esperite e mantenute all’interno delle mura domestiche.
