This work runs through the history of the company opened in Genoa, by the Tuscan merchant Francesco Datini, in 1392. The city had a fundamental role in the movement of the merchants’ trade towards the West, above all, to Catalonia. Correspondence and account books allow the company’s affairs from its foundation to its closure in 1410 to be reconstructed, highlighting its economic strategies, its commercial activity, and in the end, the outcome of the company’s activities. Internal problems, plague, civil war and external conflicts, in addition to emerging issues with other companies part of the Datini system, weighed heavily on its trading activities and profitability of the fondaco, leading to its early closure.
