There are several mechanisms which may explain associations between aspects of the reproductive behavior of women and men and length of life. More specifically researchers have investigated associations between all-cause and cause-specific mortality – or differences in survival – and variables such as gravidity (number of pregnancies), parity (number of births), miscarriages, premature births, multiple births, number of living children, and timing of births. Other indicators of health have also been investigated. These associations are usually studied in post-reproductive age groups to disentangle effects due to maternal mortality from longer-term influences of reproduction on longevity, particularly important when historical populations or populations from developing countries are considered.
