Carbonaceous material is a large fraction of urban aerosol and it is classified into elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC). EC can be considered a good indicator of primary anthropogenic pollution. OC is emitted from either anthropogenic or biogenic primary emission sources. In this paper we have measured the ground concentration of particulate matter, total carbon, EC and OC in two monitoring stations in Rome located in downtown and in a green park, respectively. The results show that in Rome the TC contribution is about 30% of PM and the OC/EC vary between 0.5 and 1.5. Finally, an OC speciation has been carried out. The long-chain carboxylic acids and Policyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute about 1.5% of total aerosol mass. Further, the PAHs are about 0.5% of OC instead their transformation products are at very low levels.
