Despite more than ten years having passed since the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, the best practices for the inclusion of the world’s largest minority, almost one billion people, are still not implemented by companies. The more recent social emergencies, such as the persistent youth unemployment, the increasing flow of migrants, and the worrying increase in inequality and poverty, seem to have overshadowed the question of employment of persons with disabilities. This issue is at the heart of remarks made by this paper, which sheds light on the important role companies should play in ensuring a proper working and social citizenship for people with disabilities. After an overview of conceptual and demographic aspects, we review some recent research concerning disability management and then we draw attention to the challenges Italian firms should face, also due to some new legislative changes.
