The gravity model has been regularly used to estimate the impact of European Union’s Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) on trade flows. Studies report very different estimates since there are significant differences in datasets, sample sizes and independent variables. This chapter combines, explains and summarizes a large number of results using a meta-analysis approach. It provides pooled estimates, obtained from fixed and random effects models, of the preferential’s effect size on bilateral trade. The information collected on each estimate allows to test the sensitivity of the results to alternative specifications and differences in the control variables considered. After filtering out all potential biases, the meta-analysis confirms a robust and positive PTAs effect.
