The Lisbon Treaty represents an important stage of the peculiar process of European unification, not only because it reiterates the Union's values (Article 2 TEU) and the tradition of peace and freedom (Article 3.1 TEU), which have allowed the creation of the European institutions, but because, for the first time, it draws the outlines of a European society as one in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men are the supporting elements. In the light of the new legal regulations introduced in the architecture of the European Union, we can consider the centrality (in almost all the systems of the Member States) of the principle of secularism and the separation of religion from the sphere of politics. This especially taking into account the fact that, in some national contexts (such as the italian one), the primacy of the principle of secularism is, in fact, called into question because of the ability of lobbying and political pressure exerted by the socially dominant Churches
