Sullo stato nazionale... e sulla natura dell'Europa

1989, the end of the Cold War, the implosion of the Soviet Republic, the acceleration of the processes of world market internationalization are all events and factors that have greatly influenced, without a doubt today’s historical scene. After decades, not only has Europe’s geography changed, but alliances regarding borders have taken on new forms. Germany has been reunited, countries beyond the Iron Curtain have reacquired their independence, territories in the Asian area have acquired or reacquired state status and the Yugoslavian federation has been dissolved. Those borders, which up until yesterday, seemed unchangeable due to fear and command that even the tiniest change could lead to the explosion of a world conflict, have now become fluid. Desegregation and aggregation have now become the “go” words in a possible historic context. These changes have come about ( in some areas with great bloodshed) and in some cases simply as proposals of latent possibilities to be carried out as soon as possible, in a more or less near future. Was this a new victory for the National State or perhaps was a new chapter opened? On the other hand, perhaps the opposite thesis could hold true? Regarding the relations of the member states of the European Union, we see the sedimentation in an original manner, a new configuration, no longer definable according to traditional categories.
